Announcing IdeaLab:Westwood in Denver on April 17!
IdeaLab is rooted in the notion that everyone is capable of being part of a movement, based around events that cross-pollinate local and national experts, create new opportunities for community connection, and engage art and artists around pressing issues.
IdeaLab’s April 17 event focuses on Westwood, a neighborhood on the brink of significant change because of recent city bond measures, and the designation of Morrison Rd. as a Creative District. Join us at RISE Westwood to discuss art, neighborhood identity, gentrification, and displacement with the community that is being impacted. In partnership with Re:Vision, Confluence-Denver and Creative Exchange, with support from the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, this event will feature artists from Denver and Detroit – Bobby Lefebre, Santiago Jaramillo, and Amelia Duran – in conversation, followed by community rapid prototyping of ideas, interventions and projects in response to these issues.
IdeaLab participants will spark new connections, create potential projects and leave inspired by their stories. The goal is to share the power and importance of art as placemaking, and to take the ideas generated to shape paths forward.

IdeaLab se basa en la idea de que todo el mundo es capaz de ser parte de un movimiento, en torno a eventos de polinización cruzada expertos locales y nacionales, crean nuevas oportunidades para la conexión con la comunidad, y se involucran el arte y artistas de cuestiones urgentes.

Amelia Duran, Garage Cultural, Detroit, MI
Born and raised in Southwest Detroit, “mother, daughter, sister, creative”, Duran has been active in her community for over 17 years through her professional experience in brick & mortar non-profit development and as a community organizer in arts/cultural work creating and executing workshops, community events and large-scale mural productions.
Proud of her Chilena-Latina-American heritage and language she strives to use them as inspiration to continue developing her skills as a visual and performance artist. Her passion as an activist is rooted in movements that are founded on popular education and creative expression, working towards creating outlets that encourage us to collectively challenge the current norms and structures of mis-education which keep communities disenfranchised.
Amelia leads the work of Garage Cultural and is a 2017 Knight Arts Challenge recipient. Garage Cultural is a community arts education collective. Its mission is to create and operate a self-sustaining Community Hub that will fulfill its vision of providing a variety of arts/entertainment events and educational programs to the residents of its communities. Southwest Detroit is a diverse community; Garage Cultural seeks to ensure its continued diversity by highlighting the existing culture and encouraging collaborations with new populations in a mutually beneficial manner through its programs and events.
Amelia Durán, Garage Cultural, Detroit, MI
Nacido y criado en el suroeste de Detroit, “madre, hija, hermana, creativo”, Durán ha sido activa en su comunidad por más de 17 años a través de su experiencia profesional en desarrollo sin ánimo de lucro el ladrillo y mortero y como organizador en el comunitario de las artes / creación de trabajo cultural y en talleres ejecución, eventos comunitarios y producciones murales a gran escala.
Orgullosa de su patrimonio y la lengua Chilena-latina-americana se esfuerza para usarlos como inspiración para continuar el desarrollo de sus habilidades como artista visual y actuación. Su pasión como activista tiene sus raíces en los movimientos que se basan en la educación popular y la expresión creativa, trabajando hacia la creación de puntos de venta que nos animan a desafiar colectivamente las normas actuales y las estructuras de educación errónea que mantienen las comunidades marginadas.
Amelia dirige el trabajo de garaje cultural y es una receptora de Knights Arts Challenge 2017. Garaje cultural es un colectivo educación artística de la comunidad. Su misión es crear y operar un centro de actividad y comunidad autosostenible que va a cumplir su visión de ofrecer una variedad de artes / eventos de entretenimiento y programas educativos para los residentes de sus comunidades. Santiago Jaramillo, D3 Arts, Denver, CO
Santiago Jaramillo is a native of Denver and a third generation Westwood resident. Since 2008, he has been a professional artist. He specializes in Aztec/Native American, Traditional Tattoo, Street art, abstract, murals, and makes traditional Aztec/Native drums. He has had many gallery showings and showed pieces in Washington D.C. at the Zero to Three National Center as well as other centers around the U.S.
Jaramillo’s focus on community collaboration has led him to a number of volunteer opportunities and community leadership roles. He is a board member of BuCu West which lead him to start D3 Arts, an artist co-op in District 3 made up of Denver residents concerned with using art as a medium to help bring life and hope to the neighborhood as well as create opportunities for artists. As one of the directors of D3 Arts, he curates art shows, organizes artists for public art pieces, and organizes events.
Jaramillo and D3 Arts will contribute to the work being done through the ArtPlace initiatives by gathering feedback from the community, working with other artists, helping to develop and maintain the art education center and incorporate art in the plaza and way-finding paths.
Santiago Jaramillo, D3 Artes, Denver, CO
Santiago Jaramillo es un nativo de Denver, y una tercera generación Westwood residente. Desde 2008, ha sido un artista profesional. Bobby LeFebre, Writer, Performer & Cultural Worker, Denver, CO
Bobby LeFebre is an award-winning writer, performer, and cultural worker from Denver, Colorado. He is a two-time Grand Slam Champion, a National Poetry Slam Finalist, an Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist, and a two-time TEDx speaker.
LeFebre has curated and performed at hundreds of cultural events, social actions, detention centers, conferences, and colleges and universities across the United States and abroad. LeFebre is Co-founder of an award-winning nonprofit organization, Cafe Cultura, which is dedicated to utilizing poetry as a tool for youth literacy, education, and cultural development.
As an actor, LeFebre is represented by Radical Artists Agency for work in film, television, commercials, industrials, voice-overs, theater, and commercial print. LeFebre has been named one of Colorado’s top 100 creatives by Westword Magazine, is a National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures fellow, A National Association of Latino Arts and Culture Advocacy Fellow, an Intercultural Leadership Institute Fellow. LeFebre has been appointed by the Mayor of Denver to serve as the Chair of the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs and his work has been featured in the New York Times, The Huffington Post, PBS, and The Guardian.

About IdeaLab
IdeaLab is a catalyst for connection and getting inspired, building partnerships and putting creative ideas into action. As a partnership between Confluence-Denver and Creative Exchange with support from the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, IdeaLab is formed around events that bring together attendees from disparate backgrounds with a shared interest in arts, culture, community development, justice, and social entrepreneurship, along with national speakers and leaders to offer broader perspective. With previous convenings in November 2015 and April 2017, over 350 attendees have engaged with IdeaLab and come away with new connections, insights, and inspiration for their work. New iterations of IdeaLab offer the opportunity for partner communities to work with the convening power and network of Confluence-Denver and Creative Exchange to connect around how artists and community and cultural organizers can collaborate and affect change.
